Suggestions for Using an Interpreter

  • Please arrange a 5-minute break for every hour the interpreter works.

  • Speak directly to the Deaf or non-English speaking consumer. The interpreter will tell you if you need to change speed or simplify material.
  • In a group, such as a meeting, please take turns in speaking.
  • Situations where two interpreters may be required include lectures, using a team/Deaf interpreter for comprehension by a consumer who uses gestural or idiosyncratic signs, or who is Deaf/Blind.
  • If there are any written materials that will be referred to, please supply these to the Agency so they may be reviewed by the interpreter in advance of the assignment.
  • If possible, when using an interpreter for the Deaf, position the interpreter in adequate light and in front of a neutral background.

It is not appropriate to use a family member as an interpreter, nor does it meet practical or legal requirements for accessibility. Our interpreters can make additional suggestions on site to help communication flow smoothly.
